Well,I didn’t intend to have this be part of the countdown, but this man was a master of capturing horror and should be included wherever people are making tributes to classic monsters.
Basil Gogos,American illustrator best known for his portraits of movie monsters on the covers of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine in the 1960s and 1970s, has died, aged 78.
His art on the covers of Famous Monsters portrayed many, of not most, of the classic horror monsters and creatures such as Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, King Kong, Godzilla,Frankenstein’s Monster, The Bride of Frankenstein,The Phantom of the Opera, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and now-legendary horror actors including Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Vincent Price.
What a master of color and mood. He could instill dread simply with a monster portrait’s color tone. His portraits are so unusual because they feature their subjects in often unconventional colored light sources. Gogos also strove to portray these characters as both frightening and sympathetic.
I had the pleasure of seeing his work at a couple of horror-related cons but never had a chance to talk to him. What a missed opportunity.
I shall now leave you with some of my favorites of his work. Enjoy.
