Chimera: First sketches

Back to our regularly scheduled program, literally; the online show I have thought of doing for years is finally going to get done. I am in a position now to have the time, the workspace and mindset to work on it, and it’s gonna happen. I’ve always wanted it to be a sort of “Beast of the Week” sort of show, in which we learn about a slew of mythological creatures and I build puppets of them to perform in their various roles in folktales and legends.
Wanting to start off with a bang, I am beginning with an old favorite, the Chimera. Translating this creature into puppet form, and into a puppet form that’s a bit different from how I usually work—-I usually go large with impressive monsters; this time I want to keep things small, because of materials, performance and later, storage issues—has its problems, but they’re good problems and fun to sort out. Translating a three-headed monstrosity into petite puppet form will be an entertaining challenge.

But first, it means I have to get to know my subject. In its various forms, the Chimera has two heads, three heads, even four, counting the snake that is sometimes its tail.

So after I scribble around with it a while I will start thinking about its transformation into fabric. Good times!

Halloween Countdown 2017: Lindsey Buckingham’s “Go Insane” Video!

I have reviewed several spooky/unsettling videos on here; I still have yet to review “Rockit”,but I may overcome that this season.

A video whose song I loved and was a little freaked out by its video is “Go Insane” by  Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham is one of those artists whom I didn’t know were part of other, bigger entities when I discovered them back in the 1980s, when my music tastes were developing. Once I learned he was part of Fleetwood Mac, I felt a little embarrassed. Same story with Paul McCartney—– once I figured out McCartney was one of the Beatles, I had to backtrack and realize that was Paul singing on on so many of my favorite old songs. I could go on—-Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Lynne, etc. Anyway, Lindsey Buckingham’s “Go Insane” video has some of the early roots of computer animation and good old superimposing at work, making some pretty wacky stuff for its time..for instance:

For the lyric “Two kinds of trouble in this world/
Living, dying “, Lindsey holds up two boxes and out pops a mini-me of himself plus an adorable little skeleton marionette.

You can “BOOP”!

Friends, I go to one of two Targets in my area EVERY day. No, I’m not driving there on a special trip; it’s simply that my daily morning errands always end right at a Target. So,I’m able to really keep up with what’s shakin’ in their Halloween department, or “Booporium”, this year.
