Christmas 2017 Aftermath: The Christmas Fun Box!

20171229_160923.jpg

Christmas is gone, and in years past, a crushing depression would befall me this time of year. Taking the tree down is almost too much for me to bear; I am a Christmas junkie, through and through, and I don’t like it one bit when my fix is over.
Luckily, I belong to a couple of Facebook groups who are composed of Christmas kitsch collectors, and they have assured me that it is totally okay to want Christmas all year round in some way. They’re a fun bunch.
This year I am doing something new, and I wish I could grab a time machine and go back and tell my 20-year-old self to do it, too. I assembled a “Christmas Fun Box”.
See,I LOVE looking at old Wish Book catalogs, seeing what styles of decor were the thing, and seeing what toys were hot. What were the popular foods for the main Christmas dinner or snacks? And best of all, what sort of fun novelties and toys were the stores carrying that people bought for stocking-stuffing and party favors and last-minute gifts? This is what I wanted to curate; I’m already doing it with Halloween, and I got ready for  my Christmas collecting by getting a small, Christmas-decorated box…..

Halloween Countdown 2017: A Boatload o’ Target Pics!

You can “BOOP”!

Friends, I go to one of two Targets in my area EVERY day. No, I’m not driving there on a special trip; it’s simply that my daily morning errands always end right at a Target. So,I’m able to really keep up with what’s shakin’ in their Halloween department, or “Booporium”, this year.

Halloween Countdown 2017: Boys’ Life Space Costume Fun!

Today I went by my favorite local flea market, which I haven’t patronized in a while due to my curbing my flea marketing activities. I was hoping to justify the trip by getting some good pics of their usual Halloween vintage goodness, but there wasn’t much out. However, that was all rectified with my discovery of some Boys’ Life magazines. After picking up several and thumbing through them, I was thoroughly convinced I would have loved being a Boy Scout, had I been a boy, of course. There was a lot more fun-looking stuff in those magazines than I’ve seen in magazines with a focus on young girls from back then. Except all the hunting stuff. No way, dude.
Anyway, inside one issue that  said something about  “space toys and hobbies” on the cover, there was an article on homemade costumes. I didn’t get a pic of the actual article or cover so I do not remember the year or month. But look at these gems:

Boys Life Spaceman

I think this kid has on his scouting cap, but has painted his face green and possibly his hands too. I don’t know what the space playset is even after a fairly thorough Google search, so I’m gonna ask some of my
vintage toy buff friends such as Plaid Stallions for  help.

Love the bare feet.

Kiddo is playing, in his scouting uniform, with R2-D2 and an X-Wing!!!

Boys Life Spaceman 2

Oh god…kid in uniform again, playing in the sand (didn’t the kids have to keep these uniforms clean and pressed?) with a strange alien parrot mask and ray gun!!

Boys Life Vader with Godzilla

I have saved the best for last. Boy Scout Vader Gets Beat Up By Godzilla.

(The Shogun Warriors Godzilla, to be exact. Oh, how I wanted this thing.)

Thanks for looking at old space fun playtime pics!

I FOUND IT! Halloween Countdown 2016: Collegeville and Ben Cooper Costumes!

You may remember this post about my first Halloween and my Collegeville cat costume. One photo has been missing from the group of pics, however, and I finally found it; me in all my glory with the mask down. 😀

First Halloween.jpg

I am holding this infamous Meanie Greenie, and I still have no idea why we called him that=–he isn’t green. Also, the pumpkin on the ottoman is one of those that has the very cool diamond-shaped eyes and I still have that one, too. I also still have the little horn you can see in the background.

But wait, there’s MORE!
I recently dug out a bin containing some of the costumes that I and my brothers had as kids. Its a mix of Ben Cooper and Collegeville brands, and this is still not all of them. I have yet to find the cat and the skeleton but I know they are in a bin somewhere. But for now, enjoy this first batch!
